Mughal gardens are a group of gardens built by the Mughals in the Islamic style of architecture. This style was heavily influenced by the Persian gardens particularly the Charbagh structure. Significant use of rectilinear layouts are made within the walled enclosures. Some of the typical features include pools, fountains and canals inside the gardens.
Situated inside the Rashtrapati Bhavan complex, Mughal Gardens is one of the main tourist attractions in Delhi. It is a virtual paradise combined with formal Moghul style and British garden designs. It sport the Mughal canals, multi-level terraces and also flowering shrubs with European flowerbeds, lawns and privet hedges.
Mughal Gardens was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens as a part of the original plan laid for the establishment of the Lutyens Delhi. It was designed to suit Lady Harding’s flavors. W.R. Mustoe is credited for planting trees, shrubs and plants. In 1929 it was transformed into an oasis.
The main attraction of Mughal Gardens-
The Mughal Gardens of Delhi is spread over 6 hectares and tourists visit the garden mainly to see 250 varieties of Roses and 60 varieties of Bougainvillea. Other variety of flowers found here are teptosyne, viscaria, sweet William, marigold, oxalis etc. The bonsai collection of the Mughal Gardens is one of the finest in India.
The garden consists of three parts – Rectangular Garden, Long Garden and Circular Garden. The Rectangular Garden is behind the new building.
The garden has four waterways having unique fountains at the intersections. The fountain base is a 3-tiered large red sandstone discs resembling lotus leaves.
Interesting Fact of Mughal Gardens-
Former President APJ Abdul Kalam once gave a sapling of Bhrahmi (Bacopa monnnieri) to all the visitors of the garden to promote knowledge of medicinal plants in the country.

Opened in February and March, except on Mondays.
