Originally known as All India War Memorial, India Gate is one of the most important monuments of Delhi and a prominent landmark of the city. It is also known as the national monument of India. Located in the heart of Delhi it was constructed as a memorial. The foundation stone was laid in 1921 by HRH, the Duke of Connaught and it was dedicated to the nation ten years later by Lord Irwin, the then Viceroy. India Gate has been designed by Edwin Lutyens.
India Gate commemorates ninety-thousand soldiers of the British Indian Army who sacrificed their lives in World War I. After India’s independence, India Gate became the site of the Indian Army’s Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, well known as Amar Jawan, the Immortal Soldier.
India Gate of today also presents a popular relaxation for the local people in summer evenings and in winter it is a famous picnic spot.
