Deshbandhu College was established in the year
1952 by the
Ministry of Rehabilitation, in the
late Sh. Deshbandhu Gupta-a veteran
freedom fighter. The college made a humble beginning with
just 72 students and the courses like Prep (arts), Prep (Science) and Pre-medical. The College was transferred to
Ministry of Education and later taken over by
University of Delhi.
Deshbandhu College (morning) has gained the distinction of being the
oldest co-educational institute in south Delhi promoting
arts, commerce and science courses.
Principal A Raste says:
“Our college is the oldest science, college and was ranked the
28th best science college in India and
eighth best in Delhi last year. Only five colleges in DU have BSc (honours) biochemistry. We have recently renovated our
60-year old science block and are soon going to inaugurate the web access centre. New students will join a modern college with
Wi-Fi connectivity and best infrastructure”
College Courses Offered: – BA, BA (honours) in economics, English, Hindi, History Mathematics, Political science, Sanskrit; BCom (honours)BSc life sciences, BSc physical sciences, BSc (honours) in biochemistry, Botany, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Zoology, BSc applied physical sciences (computer science), Bsc Applied physical science (industrial chemistry).

The campus has an administrative block, arts block, science block and a huge library with more than
95,000 books. It also features
well-equipped, laboratories student common rooms, a gymnasium and a canteen. The college has an extensive playground which serves the purpose of outer games, a spacious reading room, NSS, NCC and a
placement cell.
