Delhi Metro History
The concept of bringing metro rail service to Delhi was formalized as early as 1960 but it took almost two decades to make the legal framework. In 1978 Metro Railways (Construction of Works) Act came into existence. The actual work however started as late as 1995 when the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (DMRC) was established and the physical construction works in fact started on October 1, 1998.
The first line of Delhi Metro was opened for public on December 24, 2002. The first phase of work ended three years before the scheduled time and BusinessWeek (business magazine) described this achievement of DMRC as "nothing short of a miracle."
