Delhi will soon be able to provide
temporary accommodation to the migrant workers engaged in various projects upcoming in the National Capital. The lead agency for industrial and infrastructure development here has been tasked with providing dormitories for such migrant workers, an official said.
Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructural Development Corporation, chairman-cum-managing director Chetan Sanghi said the corporation will build
five-bedded and
10-bedded dormitories in Kanjhawala, in north Delhi, to provide shelter to about 20,000 workers.
The dormitories spread over an area of some 33 acres, are to be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 362.05 crore. These will be given to construction firms and contractors on rent for the workers engaged in the construction industry, other migrant workers who cannot afford shelter at market rates and seasonal workers, Sanghi said. “Land for the purpose has already been allotted to DSIIDC for construction of housing for the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS). The
land is likely to be handed over to DSIIDC shortly,” he said.
Adequate
social infrastructure has been planned in the project, which includes infrastructure for vocational training and skill development. The cost of routine maintenance will be met from the recovery of rent, sanghi said.
