Suraj KundSuraj Kund is the earliest existing record of Delhi’s past glories. It has a rich past. It is at the backdrop of the Aravallis and has a pool, locally known as Kund, with amphitheatre around it.

The word Suraj means Sun. The kund had a sun temple by its side but now it is only ruins. The pool is still there. It is said that Suraj Kund was built by the Tomar Chieftain Suraj Pal in the 10th century A.D.

Stories also goes that it was built for the daughter of Chieftain Suraj Pal. Some believes a different story. They say the kund had miraculous healing powers.

Before becoming a famous spot with the name tag Suraj Kund Mela, it was just another picnic option of Delhi. Today it is a no more considered as a picnic spot but a comfortable weekend gateway for Delhi people.

Suraj Kund Mela
Every year between first to fifteenth of February a colorful annual traditional craft festival is held in the backdrop of the lake. Traditional craftsman such as artists, painters, weavers and sculptors from all over the country take part in this annual celebration. The Surajkund fair was first started in 1987 and since then every year it is visited by lovers of arts and crafts from all over the world. Surajkund Crafts Mela is organized by Haryana Tourism from 1st to 15th February every year.

How to Reach Surajkund

By Road :
Surajkund is well connect to Delhi, Gurgaon and Faridabad. The direct bus is not available to Suraj Kund. The Surajkund Xing DTC bus stand is just 1 KM from the Surajkund. The rickshaw, auto and taxis are available from the SurajKund Xing (Prehladpur) on Mehrauli-Badarpur Road.

By Air : Surajkund is 25 km from Palam Airport and 35 minute drive from the Indira Gandhi International Airport.

By Rail : The nearest railway junction is Old Delhi railway station. Faridabad and Gurgaon are both connected to Delhi via railway lines. The car/cab/tourist coach are available from the railway station to Surajkund.
