The green papaya salad, known as som tam, is popular in most areas of Thailand, and when you taste it, you'll know why.
Thai papaya salad: Ingredients
- 400 gm raw papaya ,shredded
- 100 gm carrots , shredded
- 50 gm bell peppers , de- seeded and finely julienned
- 2 tbsp peanuts, roasted, crushed
- 2 tsp fresh coriander
- 1 ripe tomatoes, de-seeded and julienned
- Lemon zest, shredded
- ¼ grape fruit fruit segments
- 2 tbsp passion fruit pulp
For the dressing
- 2 tbsp sweet tamarind extract
- 1 pod garlic, chopped ]
- 2 tsp fish sauce (replace with lite saya if you are vegetarian )
- 1 tsp sugar
- ½ tsp bird-eye chilly, finely minced
Som Tam Salad Recipe: Method
For the dressing
- Combine all ingredients. Whisk well
- Rest for an hour.
For the salad
- Combine all the salad ingredients, except passion fruit, grape fruit and peanuts.
- Toss salad ingredients in a bowl.
- Pound. Plate the salad.
- Sprinkle remaining peanuts and grape fruit segments.
- Pour passion fruit extract evenly over the salad. Server chilled.
