Delhi mosquito free. Keep your work place hygienic and free of stagnant water “
reads a message on MCD website, to make Delhi free from the menace of dengue. However, despite such messages and awareness campaigns fresh cases of dengue continue to be reported. Although summer is not the conducive season for dengue-carrier, aedes agypti mosquitoes, to breed and infect people. However, even in this weather
cases of dengue fever are being reported.
“Dengue cases being reported during extreme summers and winters clearly indicate that the epidemiology of dengue fever is changing,” says Dr V K Monga, chairperson, public health committee, Municipal Corporation of Delhi. With the report of one more dengue case in East Delhi, residents are doing their best to keep the menace at bay. From cleaning their coolers regularly to encouraging kinds to wear full sleeves clothes to sleeping in mosquitoes net, they are doing whatever they can to safeguard their family against dengue. “It would be nice if MCD increases the frequency of fogging in the area. As of now they conduct fogging drives once in a while, which is not sufficient considering the magnitude of the threat, “says Pooja Chauhan, a resident of Vashundra Encalve.
It seems that aedes agypti does not need rainy season to strike anymore. A couple of years ago dengue cases used to be reported in rainy season only, but not anymore. First dengue case of 2011 was reported on March 3 and by the end of April three more cases have been reported. As per a study conducted by MCD on dengue patients in the city, it was found that office goers and school children are more vulnerable to dengue.
