India on Monday summoned China's deputy chief of mission here to complain about a courtroom
assault on an Indian diplomat in the Chinese
city of Yiwu.
An Indian
diplomat fainted and was hospitalised after being not allowed to leave a courtroom in Yiwu city, near Shanghai, for several hours despite being a diabetic. His
ill-health was due to being denied food and medication.
Mr Zhang Yue, Chinese deputy chief of mission in New Delhi, was summoned to South Block and told of New Delhi’s “strong displeasure” over the incident. Prior to this, the Indian embassy in Beijing and the consulate in Shanghai had also registered protests.
The
incident occured on December 31 when S. Balachandran, 46, a counsellor at the Shanghai consulate, had gone to a court in Yiwu city in Zhejiang province to assist two Indian traders. The two, Deepak Raheja and Shyamsunder Aggarwal, had allegedly been forcibly detained by Chinese traders after their company failed to pay them their dues.
