About 100 Delhi University students with special needs will get to go to different foreign universities in the coming months. Vice chancellor of DU, Dinesh Singh, announced this on Tuesday that students with physical disabilities will be sent abroad for a month to study and explore technologies and resources there. "The students will be there for a month following which we would like them to use their experience to innovate in the university. We are looking at sending them to the universities in the US though it will take at least two months to arrange the trip," said Bipin Tiwari, OSD, Equal Opportunity Cell at DU. The announcement was made by Singh at the flag-in ceremony of the National Awareness Campaign 2012, 'Badhte Kadam IV', highlighting the social and cultural integration of people with disability. Also present on the occasion was Stuti Kackar, secretary, department of disability affairs, ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, government of India.

Recently, DU has decided to waive off the fee and hostel charges for physically disabled students from 2012-13. The university will also provide 50% mess subsidy to these students. DU has decided to exempt physically disabled students admitted in its departments, faculties and colleges/institutes from paying fees. This will not include admission fee, ID card fee and subscription towards Delhi University Students' Union. Nearly 500 disabled students have enrolled in DU this year which is the highest figure registered so far. The university has 1,500 undergraduate seats reserved for disabled students. The decision of the university is expected to benefit about 2,000 students at both bachelor's and master's degree level, including PhD and MPhil.DU has also planned to provide free transport, facility of assistive devices and subsidised housing to help disabled students in their higher education.
